How to find conference proceedings in the library catalog

Finding conferences can be tricky because of the erratic way they are published and cited. Here are a few pointers.

1. Conference sponsors can be searched as authors, and often editors of the proceedings. If you know either of these, try an author search.

2. If you are certain as to the actual published title of the proceedings, try that as a title browse search.

3. If the title has a unique word in it such as Compcon, try that as a title word search.

4. If you know where or when the conference was held, you can use that as a title word search. For example:
"paris 1998" will find conferences held in Paris in 1998.
"ieee fuzzy 2nd" will find IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems (2nd : 1993 : San Francisco, Calif.).

If none of the above retrieve the conference, contact the Library via phone (7-5809) or e-mail (library@lanl.gov).

How to find conference papers in databases

Many databases offered by the Research Library index the papers in conference proceedings. Coverage of key databases:

Database Subjects covered Years covered # of conference records
BIOSIS biosciences 1969- 4.1 million
Energy Citations Database in OPPIE (formerly DOE Energy) energy, physics, engineering, materials science, computer science, etc. 1974- 1.3 million
Engineering Index engineering 1969- 1.7 million
GeoRef geological sciences, envt. 1795- 623K
Inspec physics, electrical engineering, electronics, computer science 1969- 2.5 milion
ISI Proceedings all sciences 1990- 3.1 million
ISI SciSearch all sciences 1945- 4.8 million - only conf. papers published in journals
ISI Social SciSearch social sciences 1973- 220K - only conf. papers published in journals

all of the above

In most of these databases you can limit a search to Document Type "Conference Publication." In OPPIE, after your search, you can limit by database using the facets on the left-hand side of the results page.

Full-text is often available using the LinkSeeker links in these databases, however conference papers don't always link well, so check the library catalog or contact the library if you don't find full-text at first.
