Edited by: Goldsmith, SK, Pelimar, TC, Kleinman, AM, and Bunney, WE
Committee on Pathophysiology and Prevention of Adolescent and Adult Suicide Board of Neuroscience and Behavioral Health

Biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors all have a significant impact on the risk of suicide. This report reviews many of these risk factors individually, while emphasizing the need for an integrated understanding of the influences. The Committee on Pathophysiology and Prevention of Adolescent and Adult Suicide, Board of Neuroscience and Behavioral Health, convened by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), examined the state of the science, gaps in knowledge, strategies for prevention, and research designs for the study of suicide.

The report was conducted by the IOM with support from the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the Veterans' Administration.

Made available June 17, 2002, the full report can be found at http://books.nap.edu/books/0309083214/html/index.html.
