TransportationPeople with disabilities who live in rural areas cite the lack of transportation as one of their most significant and persistent problems. Federal allocation of funds for surface transportation exacerbates the discrepancy between rural and urban areas -- only five percent of the funds serve the 25 percent of the population living in rural areas. One out of 13 rural households doesn't own a private vehicle, and for 41 percent of rural residents, there is no public transportation available (Status Report on Public Transportation in Rural America, 1994). Lack of transportation is a particular problem for women, elderly people, poor people, people with disabilities and service providers in rural areas. The Research and Training Center on Disability in Rural Communities is exploring some promising rural transportation strategies. |
