NRC COMMENTS ON GAO REPORT ON INDIAN POINT 2 |
|||||||||
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has been working with the General Accounting Office (GAO) for some time with regard to its report released today on Emergency Preparedness at Indian Point 2 (IP2) nuclear power plant, located 30 miles north of New York City. The GAO recommends increased direct interaction between Federal agencies and State and local governments, on the basis that these contacts are now limited. The NRC recognizes the value of effective communication between Federal agencies and State and local governments in developing and implementing radiological emergency response plans for nuclear plants. In fact, the NRC already interacts with State and local governments through emergency exercises, outreach training and planning meetings. For the IP2 site, the NRC staff has interacted with New York State and local government representatives over the past five years approximately a half a dozen times through emergency exercises and outreach training. Nonetheless, we are taking the GAO's recommendations under advisement and will look for opportunities for improvement in communicating with State and local officials. |
