NRC TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING ON NUCLEAR RESEARCH IN MARYLAND ON JANUARY 24 - 25

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has scheduled a public meeting to discuss the role and direction of nuclear regulatory research on January 24 and 25 in Bethesda, Maryland. Participants in the meeting, the third in a series, will include government officials, members of the general public, industry representatives, and experts from academia and the international arena.

The public meeting will be held at the Marriott Residence Inn at 7335 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda, one block south of Bethesda Metro Station on the Red Line. It will start at 8 a.m. each day, and is expected to end by 5 p.m.

The session will include discussion of a draft report that is composed of the individual views and recommendations of the group experts on the role and future direction of nuclear regulatory research. The report is available on the NRC's web site, at www.nrc.gov/RES/nrc.html. Strategies to evaluate and implement the recommendations also will be discussed at the meeting. In addition, the agency's licensing and regional offices will provide an overview of their technical assistance and research activities.

Those who seek additional information or agenda updates on the meeting, should contact Jim Johnson, at 301-415-6293. Seating for the meeting is limited and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.
