Ellis Merschoff, the regional administrator of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Region IV, will hold a press conference on June 22 at 6 p.m. in Auburn, Nebraska. Mr. Merschoff will discuss the Agency's new program for inspection and performance assessment of nuclear power plants. A pilot program to test the new procedures and performance assessment process is underway at Cooper Nuclear Station and Ft. Calhoun Station in Nebraska.
The press conference will take place at the Arbor Manor, 1617 Central Ave., Auburn, Nebraska. It will precede a meeting with the public, also to describe the pilot program.
The NRC has developed the new reactor inspection and assessment program to more effectively and efficiently use its resources. Changes in the inspection and assessment effort are necessary to keep pace with improvements in nuclear power plant safety performance over the past 20 years.
