NRC EXTENDS DATE FOR BWX TECHNOLOGIES, INC. TO SUBMIT DECOMMISSIONING PLAN FOR PARKS TOWNSHIP DISPOSAL AREA

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has extended until next June 4, the due date for BWX Technologies, Inc. (BWXT) to submit a decommissioning plan for its Shallow Land Disposal Area in Parks Township, Pennsylvania.

The agency granted the extension, from December 6, to provide time for BWXT, a nuclear materials licensee, and the Army Corps of Engineers to coordinate on remediation activities, as well as to ensure the coordination of new responsibilities and duties between the NRC, the Corps and BWXT.

By recent Congressional mandate, the Corps is to determine the appropriate response under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act to address contamination at the Pennsylvania site. Congress has appropriated $5 million for the Corps to perform these activities next year as part of the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act for fiscal year 2001.

The NRC plans to hold a public information meeting near the site next spring to discuss coordination between the agency, BWXT and the Corps relating to contamination and decommissioning issues.

The Shallow Land Disposal Area is located in Armstrong County, about 23 miles east-northeast of Pittsburgh. The disposal area was used by a former owner, Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corporation, to dispose of both radioactively contaminated wastes (primarily uranium and thorium) and non-radioactive wastes in accordance with NRC regulations in effect at the time.
