V.C. SUMMER EVENT INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON NRC WEB SITE The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is posting information on the October 12 discovery of a crack in the reactor coolant system piping at South Carolina Electric and Gas Company's Summer nuclear power plant near Jenkinsville, South Carolina. The crack was discovered when the plant shut down in early October for a scheduled refueling outage. The web site contains background information, news releases, public meeting notices, reference documents and inspection reports in one convenient location at: http://www.nrc.gov/NRC/REACTOR/SUMMER/index.htm on the agency's web site. Recently added to the web site are: (1) the licensee's October 13 notification to NRC of the discovery of the crack; (2) an October 13 report on the event prepared at NRC headquarters; (3) NRC Information Notice (2000-17) dated October 18 that was sent to NRC's reactor licensees advising them of the Summer event; (4) the charter for the NRC Special Inspection team; (5) a notice and summary of the October 25 public meeting between NRC and South Carolina Electric & Gas Company to discuss planned activities concerning the weld crack; and (6) the October 31 news release announcing the dispatch of an NRC special inspection team to the plant.
