NRC TO HOST EXHIBIT BOOTH, PRESENT PAPERS ON YUCCA MOUNTAIN AT GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY MEETING IN NEVADA

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will host an exhibit booth at the Geological Society of America's annual meeting November 12 to 16 in Reno, Nevada, to explain the agency's independent role in evaluating the safety of a possible high-level radioactive waste repository in Yucca Mountain, Nevada. The presentation will be made at the Reno/Sparks Convention Center, 4590 South Virginia Street.

At the meeting, the agency and its contractors at the Center for Nuclear Waste Regulatory Analyses in San Antonio, Texas, will present 13 technical papers on subjects related to earthquakes, volcanos and other geologic issues involving Yucca Mountain. The tools that the NRC would use to evaluate the long-term safety of a proposed repository, such as performance assessment, will also be presented.

Information on the NRC, its independent role at Yucca Mountain, and the use of performance assessment will be available at the NRC exhibit (Booth 333). Copies of the technical paper abstracts presented at this meeting and materials available at the booth will also be located on the NRC web site at http://www.nrc.gov/NMSS/DWM/gsa.htm .

Titles and presenters of the technical papers are:

-- "Integration of Fracture Data into Shallow Infiltration Models" (Randall W. Fedors)

-- "Calibrating a 2-D Reactive Transport Model of Yucca Mountain, NV, to Ambient Conditions: Implications for Uncertainty in Thermally Perturbed Model Simulations" (Lauren Browning)
