NRC SCHEDULES DECOMMISSIONING WORKSHOP NOVEMBER 8-9 IN MARYLAND The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public workshop November 8-9 at its headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, to obtain comments on the agency's process for evaluating decommissioning and license termination plans for reactor and materials licensees, and to discuss current decommissioning issues. Chairman Richard Meserve will provide opening remarks. Topics at the meeting will include discussions of the review process for materials and reactor decommissioning, the agency's expectations for decommissioning plans and environmental reports, and opportunities for public involvement in the process. Since 1997, certain NRC licensees have been required to submit decommissioning plans or license termination plans to describe their activities while shutting down operations. The NRC staff has been developing guidance to assist in this effort, and has held numerous workshops to obtain input from the public and the nuclear industry on technical issues associated with decommissioning. This meeting is part of the continuing effort to enhance the entire decommissioning program and to obtain perspectives from other interested parties. The meeting will include several roundtable discussions with invited stakeholders on partial site release criteria, restricted site use issues, and the license termination plan review process. Copies of the agenda are available on the NRC web page, at http://www.nrc.gov/NMSS/DWM/DECOM/NovWkspAgnda.htm The workshop will be held in the auditorium of the agency's Two White Flint North Building, at 11545 Rockville Pike, and will begin 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:45 p.m. each day. # # # # # |
