NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS TO MEET ON STEAM GENERATOR TUBE INTEGRITY, OTHER ISSUES IN ROCKVILLE, MD., NOVEMBER 2-4

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) has scheduled a meeting from November 2-4 in Rockville, Maryland, to discuss several issues of current interest, including a Differing Professional Opinion on steam generator tube integrity.

The meeting, which will be open to the public, will be held in Room T-2B3 of the agency's Two White Flint North building, at 11545 Rockville Pike, beginning at 8:30 a.m. each day.

On the opening day, the committee will first hear presentations by and hold discussions with representatives of the NRC staff on the proposed final report of the technical study of spent fuel pool accident risk at nuclear power plants being decommissioned. It also will discuss with the staff an update on the Risk-Informed Regulation Implementation Plan and review with the staff the proposed framework for risk-informed changes to technical requirements for nuclear power plants (10 CFR Part 50). In the afternoon, the committee will hear a report by the Ad Hoc Committee Chairman on the outcome of the October 10-14 subcommittee meeting on a Differing Professional Opinion (DPO) on steam generator tube integrity. It will then hold discussions with the DPO author and the NRC staff.

On November 3, the committee will meet with members of the staff and industry representatives on the performance-based, risk-informed fire protection standard for light-water nuclear reactors and related issues. A report by the subcommittee chairman on a subcommittee meeting on digital instrumentation and control applications will be heard as well, followed by discussion with the NRC staff on the proposed Standard Review Plan for license renewal, Generic Aging Lessons Learned Report, Regulatory Guide, and the Nuclear Energy Institute's "Industry Guidelines for Implementing the Requirements of the License Renewal Rule." The future ACRS activities/reports of the planning and procedures subcommittee will be discussed, along with the reconciliation of ACRS comments and recommendations, and the preparation of draft and proposed ACRS reports.

The final day's agenda will include discussion of proposed ACRS reports and miscellaneous items.

Those who wish to make oral or written statements, or seek additional information on the meeting or changes to the agenda, should contact James Lyons, at 301-415-7371. ACRS meeting notices, transcripts and letters are available on the internet, at http://www.nrc.gov/ACRSACNW/ .
