NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON NUCLEAR WASTE TO MEET IN ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, OCTOBER 17 -19

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste (ACNW) has scheduled a meeting from October 17-19 in Rockville, Maryland, to discuss, among other issues, the decommissioning criteria for the former West Valley reprocessing plant in New York.

The meeting, which will be open to the public, will be held in Room T-2B3 of the agency's Two White Flint North building, at 11545 Rockville Pike, beginning at 8:30 each day.

On the opening day, the committee will discuss the revised site suitability and license application task action plan, and hear an NRC staff briefing on the results of its evaluation of comments and a proposed final approach to the decommissioning criteria for the former West Valley nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in New York. It also will review proposed ACNW reports.

On October 18, the committee will discuss recent tests exploring specific aspects of the corrosion resistance of Alloy-22 material, then hear a presentation from the NRC staff on its rulemaking plan addressing the entombment option for nuclear power reactors, as well as comments from consultants and others on recent related activities.

The final day's agenda will include an information briefing by the agency staff on its progress in developing a more risk-informed and coherent set of requirements for licensing source material, a discussion of proposed ACNW reports and miscellaneous items.

Those who wish to make oral or written statements, or seek additional information on the meeting or changes to the agenda should contact Howard Larson, at 301-415-6805.

ACNW meeting notices, transcripts and letters are available on the internet, at http://www.nrc.gov/ACRSACNW/ .
