NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS TO MEET IN ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, ON OCTOBER 5 - 7

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards has scheduled a meeting on October 5-7 in Rockville, Maryland, to discuss, among other issues, the Union of Concerned Scientists' (UCS) recent report on nuclear power plant risk studies.

The meeting, which will be open to the public, will be held in Room T-2B3 of the agency's Two White Flint North building, at 11545 Rockville Pike, starting at 8:30 a.m. each day.

On the opening day, the committee will hear presentations by and hold discussions with representatives of the Union of Concerned Scientists, the NRC staff and other interested stakeholders on a UCS report on nuclear plant risk studies issued last month. It also will discuss proposed industry probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) peer review process certification guidelines with the Nuclear Energy Institute and NRC staff members. In addition, the committee will review the staff's recent response to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' draft standard for probabilistic risk assessment for nuclear power plant applications.

Other opening day items include discussion with the staff regarding the pressurized thermal shock technical bases re-evaluation project, the preparation of draft committee reports, and the discussion of proposed ACRS reports and topics for the next day's session with NRC Commissioners. Topics discussed will include use of risk insights in nuclear power plant regulations, the quality of PRAs, the spent fuel pool fire safety study, thermal-hydraulic codes and the status of ACRS activities on nuclear plant license renewals.

On October 6, the committee will continue its discussion of risk topics before it meets with the Commissioners at 9:30 a.m. The committee then will hear a presentation by Ralph Beedle of the NEI on industry issues, discuss equipment qualification with NRC staff, and review the generic guidance documents associated with license renewal. Also, the committee will review responses from the NRC Executive Director for Operations on comments and recommendations included in recent ACRS reports and letters.

The final day's agenda will include committee discussion of the format and content of its annual report to the Commission on the NRC Safety Research Program, as well as a variety of miscellaneous items.

Those who wish to make oral or written statements, or seek additional information on the meeting or changes to the agenda, should contact James Lyons, at 301-415-7371.
