NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON NUCLEAR WASTE REVISES AGENDA FOR MEETING IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, SEPTEMBER 19 - 20

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste (ACNW) has revised the agenda for its meeting on September 19 - 20 in Las Vegas, Nevada, to discuss issues relating to a proposed high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in Ballroom C of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, at 4255 South Paradise Road, starting at 8 a.m. each day.

On the opening day, the committee will consider proposed topics for consideration by the full committee and working groups, meet with the NRC staff to discuss progress on key technical issues, and then hear comments from stakeholders. Among the groups that have indicated their intent to provide comments are the State of Nevada, local counties, Native American tribes and the Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force. The committee also will discuss issues for its 2001 Action Plan, in addition to miscellaneous items.

The agenda for September 20 remains unchanged. The committee will discuss progress at the Yucca Mountain site with Department of Energy (DOE) officials, as well as the DOE Site Recommendation report and total system performance assessment. It also will hear from federal and state officials, along with members of the academic community. The committee will finalize topics and presentations for its next public meeting with the Commission, tentatively scheduled for October 17.

Those who wish to make oral or written statements, or seek additional information on the meeting or changes to the agenda should contact Howard Larson, at 301-415-6805.

A detailed agenda and other aspects of the meeting will be described in an upcoming edition of the Federal Register. ACNW meeting notices, transcripts and letters are available, at http://www.nrc.gov/ACRSACNW/ on the Internet.
