NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON NUCLEAR WASTE TO MEET IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, SEPTEMBER 19 - 21

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste (ACNW) has scheduled a meeting from September 19 - 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada, to discuss issues relating to the proposed high-level waste repository at Yucca Mountain.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in Ballroom C of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, at 4255 South Paradise Road, starting at 8 a.m. on each of the first two days.

On the opening day, the committee and the NRC staff will discuss the agency's plan for reviewing a possible application from the Department of Energy (DOE) to build and operate the repository. Beginning at 4:15 p.m., the committee will hear comments from stakeholders that include representatives of the State of Nevada, Nye County, Clark County, the Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force, and Lincoln County.

On September 20, the committee will discuss progress at the site with DOE officials, as well as a DOE site recommendation report and total system performance assessment. It also will hear from federal and state officials, as well as members of the academic community, during a session on the issue of Chlorine 36. The committee will discuss details of its next day's planned Yucca Mountain tour, and will finalize topics and presentations for its next public meeting with the Commission on October 17.

Those who wish to make oral or written statements, or seek additional information on the meeting or changes to the agenda should contact Howard Larson, at 301-415-6805.

A detailed agenda and other aspects of the meeting will be described in an upcoming edition of the Federal Register. ACNW meeting notices, transcripts and letters are available, at http://www.nrc.gov/ACRSACNW/ on the internet.
