NRC OFFICE OF NUCLEAR REGULATORY RESEARCH TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING IN MARYLAND ON AUGUST 16 - 17 As part of its outreach efforts, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research has scheduled a public meeting to discuss the role and future direction of nuclear regulatory research on August 16-17 in Bethesda, Maryland. Participants will include government officials, members of the general public, industry representatives, as well as experts from academia and the international arena. The public meeting will be held at the Marriott Residence Inn at 7335 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda, one block south of the Bethesda Metro Station on the Red Line. It will start at 8 a.m. and is expected to end at 5 p.m. each day. Items to be discussed include new fuel design, new reactor design, new technology, deregulation, tools needed for computations, developing technical bases to support regulatory changes, the use of mixed oxide fuels in light water reactors, maintaining critical experimental facilities and a leadership role in nuclear safety, as well as other longer-term challenges. The expert group will also focus attention on how the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research is discharging its responsibilities acquired from the previous Office of Analysis and Evaluation of Operational Data. Those who seek additional information or agenda updates on the meeting, should contact Jim Johnson, at 301-415-6293, or Joe Mate, at 301-415-6202. Seating for the meeting is limited and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. In another development involving this office, Dr. Edwin Hackett, Division of Engineering Technology, Materials Engineering Branch, has received a Certificate of Recognition from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for his technical contribution to the recent Eighth International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. Dr. Hackett was cited for his "excellent discussion" during a panel on materials related to nuclear reactor power systems. # # # # # |
