NRC CHAIRMAN RICHARD A. MESERVE TO HAVE PRESS AVAILABILITY IN LAS VEGAS

Dr. Richard A. Meserve, Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is visiting Yucca Mountain, Nevada, this week and will be available to speak to the media at 1:00 p.m. Friday in Las Vegas at the McCarran International Airport, Room 6B, Main Terminal.

The Chairman will tour the site of a possible high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain on Thursday, and will meet with state, local and Tribal officials and citizens groups on Friday morning.

He also will answer questions from interested news media on topics affecting Yucca Mountain and the NRC's role and activities regarding the site.

Dr. Meserve was sworn in as Chairman of the NRC on October 29 of last year. Prior to that he was a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Covington & Burling, having joined the firm in 1981. From 1977 to 1981, Dr. Meserve served on the White House staff as legal counsel to the President's Science and Technology Advisor. He holds a B.A. degree from Tufts University, a law degree from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University.
