NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON NUCLEAR WASTE TO MEET IN ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND ON JULY 25 -27

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste has scheduled a meeting July 25-27 in Rockville, Maryland, to discuss, among other things, the Department of Energy's (DOE) performance confirmation program for the proposed Yucca Mountain high-level waste repository.

The meeting, which will be open to the public, will be held in Room T-2B3 of the agency's Two White Flint North Building, at 11545 Rockville Pike, starting at 8:30 a.m. each day.

On the opening day, the committee will discuss topics for future consideration by the full committee and its working groups. In addition, the NRC staff will present its response to public comments on high-level waste guidelines for performance-based activities. The committee also will discuss planned letter reports on risk-informed approaches to nuclear materials regulatory applications, comments on a proposed document on low-level waste performance assessment, as well as a report on the committee's recent visit to waste management facilities in the United Kingdom and France.

On July 26, the day's agenda will open with representatives of the Department of Energy briefing the committee on details of its performance confirmation program for the proposed repository at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. The purpose of that program is to monitor various aspects of the repository design during the facility's pre-closure phase to ensure that it is operating as predicted. Other topics for this day include an NRC staff update on the Yucca Mountain key technical issue resolution strategy, and the results of recent interactions with the DOE. Additionally, the committee will review a project by the NRC's Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research on hydro-geologic model development and parameter uncertainty, as well as prepare for its next public meeting with the Commission, tentatively scheduled for October 17.

The third day's schedule will feature a committee meeting with the agency's Deputy Director of the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards to discuss items of mutual interest, a presentation by the NRC staff on its decommissioning program and a further discussion on planned reports.

Those who seek additional information or schedule updates about this meeting should contact Richard Major, at 301-415-7366.

A detailed agenda and other aspects of the meeting are described in the June 30 edition of the Federal Register. ACNW meeting notices, transcripts and letters are available on the internet, at http://www.nrc.gov/ACRSACNW.
