NRC Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste to Meet in Rockville, Maryland on June 13-15

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste has scheduled a meeting on June 13-15 in Rockville, Maryland, to discuss, among other things, proposed Yucca Mountain high-level waste repository issues.

The meeting, which will be open to the public, will be held in Room T-2B3 of the agency's Two White Flint North Building, at 11545 Rockville Pike, starting at 8:30 a.m. each day.

On the opening day of the meeting, the committee will review the latest draft version of the Low-Level Waste Branch Technical Position on the performance assessment methodology for low-level waste sites, and discuss the West Valley Demonstration Project decommissioning plan. It will begin preparation for the next public meeting with the Commission, where potential topics include: NRC's proposed rule on disposal of high-level radioactive waste in a proposed geological repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada; recent committee advice on the control of solid material from nuclear facilities; highlights of the committee's recent European trip; the agency's defense-in-depth philosophy; and the ACNW's 2000 Action Plan.

On June 14, the day's agenda will include representatives of the Department of Energy presenting the status of the design for the proposed high-level waste repository at Yucca Mountain and discussions on the status of the NRC's low-level radioactive waste program.

The third day's schedule will feature a discussion with the NRC's Director of the Division of Waste Management, Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, and consideration of two draft regulatory guides, DG-1067, "Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Reactors," and DG-1071, "Standard Format and Content for Post-Shutdown Decommissioning Activities."

Those who seek additional information or schedule updates about this meeting should contact Richard Major, at 301-415-7366.

Other aspects of the meeting are described in the May 24 edition of the Federal Register. ACNW meeting notices, transcripts and letters are available on the internet, at http://www.nrc.gov/ACRSACNW.
