NRC REGION I TO HOLD PUBLIC WORKSHOP TO DISCUSS IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW REACTOR OVERSIGHT PROCESS

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will conduct a one-day public workshop in King of Prussia, Pa., on Wednesday, December 13, to discuss the progress, challenges and successes of the agency's new reactor oversight process. The process was implemented at the nation's operating nuclear reactors last April.

The workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Radisson Valley Forge Hotel and Convention Center, 1160 1st Ave., King of Prussia. The public is invited to attend and participate.

The workshop will feature panel discussions on the significance determination process; inspection reports and inspection impact; performance indicators; and assessment and enforcement. The panels will consist of representatives from the NRC's Region I office in King of Prussia, Pa., NRC headquarters in Rockville, Md., and nuclear industry representatives.

The new process revises the inspection, assessment and enforcement programs for commercial nuclear power plants. The new programs are designed to make the NRC more effective and efficient as the nation's regulator of nuclear power safety.

More information about the new reactor oversight process is available at www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/index.html on the NRC's website.

Interested persons should pre-register by telephone or by e-mail by contacting Ms. Chris O'Rourke at 610/337-5386 or cmo@nrc.gov no later than December 11. Those interested may also register the morning of the workshop.
