NRC Staff to Meet with Consolidated Edison May 3 to Discuss Technical Issues at Indian Point 2

The staff of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet May 3 with officials of Consolidated Edison Co. of New York to discuss technical issues associated with a February 15 event at the Indian Point 2 nuclear power plant in Buchanan, New York.

The meeting, which will be open to the public, will be held in Room T-3B45 of the agency's Two White Flint Building, at 11545 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland, starting at 11:00 a.m. Items to be discussed include the root cause analysis performed by the licensee, past and current steam generator inspections and other associated technical issues.

Consolidated Edison workers manually shut down the plant on February 15 following indications of a tube failure in one of the plant's four steam generators. (The steam generators are components that transfer heat from the reactor systems to the power-generating portion of a nuclear power plant.) Plant safety systems performed as designed during the shutdown.

The NRC sent an Augmented Inspection Team to the plant to investigate the event and the response of the plant's operator. The team's findings were discussed during a public meeting in Buchanan on March 29. The plant has been shut down since February 15.

Additional information on the event is available at: http://www.nrc.gov/NRC/REACTOR/IP/index.html on NRC's web site.
