NRC to Prepare Draft Supplement to the Generic Environmental Impact Statement on Decommissioning Nuclear Plants and Hold Public Meetings

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold four public meetings for the purpose of soliciting comments on its intent to prepare a Draft Supplement to the Generic Environmental Impact Statement on Decommissioning of Nuclear Facilities.

The meetings will be held from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel in Lisle, Illinois, on April 27 ; in Boston on May 17 at the Marriott Copley Place; in Atlanta on June 13; and in San Francisco on June 21. Locations for the Atlanta and San Francisco meetings will be announced later.

Although NUREG-0586, "Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS) on Decommissioning Nuclear Facilities," published in 1988, covered all NRC-licensed facilities, the supplement NRC intends to prepare will address only the decommissioning of nuclear power reactors. The NRC plans to issue a draft supplement for public comment next year.

The meetings will include a presentation by the NRC staff on the reasons a supplement to the GEIS is being prepared and the environmental issues related to the decommissioning of nuclear plants it will address.

Interested persons are invited to make comments at the meeting or to submit written comments by July 15 to the Chief, Rules and Directives Branch, Division of Administrative Services, Mail Stop T-6-D-59, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, D.C. 20555-001, or electronically to the NRC at DGEIS@NRC.GOV .
