NRC COMMISSIONER TO VISIT ROBINSON NUCLEAR PLANT DECEMBER 14

U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission member, Jeffrey S. Merrifield, will visit Carolina Power & Light/Progress Energy's Robinson nuclear power plant near Hartsville, South Carolina, on Thursday, December 14, to tour the facility and discuss its operation with CP&L/Progress Energy officials.

Commissioner Merrifield will be available to meet with interested news media representatives at 3:30 p.m. (EST) in the plant's Visitors Center.

In addition to visiting the Robinson plant, Commissioner Merrifield will be visiting Duke Energy's McGuire Nuclear Station, near Huntersville, North Carolina on Wednesday, December 13, and the South Carolina Electric & Gas Summer Nuclear Station on Friday, the 15th. However, his only media availability during the trip will be at the Robinson plant on the afternoon of the 14th.

Commissioner Merrifield was sworn in as a member of the NRC on October 23, 1998. Prior to assuming that post, he served for several years as senior counsel and legislative assistant to two United States Senators and as a Washington, D. C. attorney, specializing in environmental and regulatory issues.

A native of Antrim, N.H., he majored in political science and history at Tufts University where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree, magna cum laude, in 1985. He received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1992. He is a member of the bar of both New Hampshire and the District of Columbia.
