NRC TO MEET WITH PUBLIC ON HADDAM NECK LICENSE TERMINATION PLAN

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet with the public on Tuesday evening, October 17, to solicit comments on the License Termination Plan (LTP) for the Haddam Neck nuclear plant in Haddam, Conn. Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company is the operator of the plant.

Haddam Neck permanently ceased operations on December 5, 1996. The facility is currently undergoing decommissioning.

In accordance with NRC regulations, all companies licensed to operate a nuclear power reactor must submit an application to terminate the license. The LTP must be approved by the NRC. Connecticut Yankee submitted its proposed LTP on July 7 of this year. If found acceptable by the NRC staff, the LTP is approved by license amendment, subject to such conditions and limitations as the NRC staff deems appropriate and necessary.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Haddam-Killingworth High School, 95 Little City Road, Higganum, Conn. Prior to the meeting, NRC staff will be available in the lobby outside the auditorium to informally discuss items of interest pertaining to the Haddam Neck LTP or decommissioning in general. In addition, printed information regarding decommissioning will be available.

An electronic version of the LTP can be viewed through the NRC's Agency-wide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS), accession number ML003735143. Assistance in using this system is available by calling 301/415-4737. It is also posted on the NRC's web page at www.nrc.gov/OPA/reports/hnltr.html.

Written comments may be submitted to: Chief, Rules and Directives Branch, Division of Administrative Services, Mail Stop T-6 D59, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001.
