NRC TO MEET WITH PLANT OFFICIALS ON OCTOBER 30 TO DISCUSS D.C. COOK UNIT 1 RESTART ACTIVITIES

Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff members will meet with American Electric Power Company officials on Monday, October 30, to discuss the status of D.C. Cook Nuclear Power Station's preparations for resuming operations of its Unit 1 reactor in southwest Michigan.

The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. EST in the D.C. Cook plant's Training Building. The plant is located at 7700 Red Arrow Highway between Bridgman and Stevensville. NRC and plant officials have been meeting periodically with utility officials to discuss the status of Unit 1 restart activities and the operational performance of Unit 2. This meeting is open to public observation and NRC staff members will be available after the meeting to answer questions.

The plant has two reactor units. Unit 2 restarted in late June. AEP officials have targeted the early part of next year to restart Unit 1. However, in an AEP news release issued in late September, company officials stated that they had asked the NRC to prepare for the possibility of an earlier restart. Both units were shut down in September 1997 after an NRC design inspection questioned the capabilities of key plant emergency systems to meet their design requirements.
