NRC Seeking Comments on Public Document Room Services Being Relocated from Washington, D.C. to Rockville, Maryland

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking comments on how best to optimize services of its Public Document Room that will be relocated from Washington, D.C., to the agency's Rockville, Maryland, headquarters by September 30. The move is designed to increase efficiency through the co-location of the facility at headquarters.

Currently located at 2120 L Street N.W. in Washington, D.C., the Public Document Room (PDR) serves as a bridge between the agency and the public and reflects the Commission's openness policy. It provides onsite and remote access to a comprehensive collection of publicly available NRC documents in paper, microfiche, or electronic format. The collection includes documents related to NRC licensing proceedings, Commission papers, inspection reports, correspondence on technical, legal and policy matters, and other significant decisions and actions.

The new location will be conveniently located on Marinelli Drive directly across from the White Flint Station on Metro's Red Line. All services currently provided at the Washington, D.C., location will be available in the newly renovated space at NRC headquarters, with one exception. Only paper copies of the more frequently requested, recent documents will be kept on site. The majority of the historical paper collection will be stored off site with provisions for no-cost, quick turn-around retrieval service.

The PDR provides terminals and assistance for the public to access documents in the Agency Wide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS). In addition, duplication services are available for a fee. There will continue to be an "800" number for callers outside the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area; however, that number will change when the move is finalized.

Comments should be sent to David L. Meyer, Chief, Rules and Directives Branch, Office of Administration, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Mail Stop T-6D59, Washington, D.C. 20555-0001. Those wishing to hand deliver comments can do so at 11545 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland, between 7:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. on federal workdays.

The comment period expires 30 days following publication of a Federal Register notice on this subject, expected shortly. Comments received after this date will be considered if it is practical to do so, but the Commission is able to assure consideration only for comments received on or before this date.
