NRC TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING INDIAN POINT 2 NUCLEAR PLANT

Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with the public on Monday, June 19, to discuss several issues associated with the Indian Point 2 nuclear power plant. The NRC is holding the local meeting to keep interested members of the public informed of developments involving the facility. It is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the plant's Energy Education Center, at Broadway and Bleakley Avenue in Buchanan, N.Y.

Indian Point 2 was manually shut down on February 15 following the failure of a tube in a steam generator. (Steam generators are components that employ thousands of U-shaped tubes to transfer heat from reactor systems to the power-generating portion of a nuclear power plant.) Plant safety systems performed as designed during the shutdown.

On June 5, Consolidated Edison Company of New York, the plant's owner/operator, submitted the results of steam generator inspections and its proposed basis for restart of the unit following repairs. NRC staff is currently reviewing that proposal. No decision on the proposal will be made at the meeting.

At the June 19th meeting, NRC staff will do the following:

  • Provide a brief overview of the agency's overall process for reviewing the performance of Indian Point 2.
  • Discuss the current status of the NRC's ongoing assessment of steam generator tube integrity issues.

Following the NRC presentations, the staff will offer the public an opportunity to ask questions regarding these matters.
