NRC TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS LATEST ASSESSMENT OF HARRIS PLANT

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled a brief public meeting for Wednesday, June 14 to discuss the NRC Reactor Oversight Program Annual Assessment for Carolina Power & Light's Harris Nuclear Power Plant, located about 20 miles southwest of Raleigh, North Carolina.

The meeting will be at 1 p.m. EDT at the plant's administration building. NRC staff members will discuss the plant's performance and will be available after the meeting to answer any questions from media or members of the public.

The oversight program annual assessments are used to evaluate safety performance information and identify any changes in plant performance so the NRC can allocate inspection resources appropriately. The text of each report, including the one on Harris, is available from the NRC Office of Public Affairs and the Harris report has been posted on the NRC web site at: www.nrc.gov/OPA/ppr/harris2000.html.

Current performance information for the Harris plant is also available on the NRC web site at: www.nrc.gov/NRR/OVERSIGHT/ASSESS/HAR1/har1_chart.html.
