NRC to Meet with Public on Maine Yankee License Termination Plan

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet with the public on Monday evening, May 15, to solicit comments on the license termination plan for the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station. The plant, in Wiscasset, Maine, permanently ceased operations on August 7, 1997.

In accordance with NRC regulations, all companies licensed to operate a nuclear power reactor must submit an application to terminate the license. A license termination plan also must be submitted for NRC approval. Maine Yankee submitted the proposed license termination plan on January 13 of this year.

The meeting will be held at the Wiscasset High School. It begins at 7:00 p.m.

An electronic version of the license termination plan can be viewed through the NRC Agency-wide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS), accession number ML003676560. Assistance in using this system is available by calling 202/634-3273. A paper copy is also available for review at the Wiscasset Public Library on High Street in Wiscasset.

Written comments may be submitted within 60 days after the meeting. In addition, the NRC Mobile Radiological Measurements Laboratory will be parked in the lot adjacent to the former Information Center at the Maine Yankee site on Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Members of the NRC technical staff will be on hand to conduct tours and answer questions. The Laboratory is used to make confirmatory measurements at the site.
