NRC, Consolidated Edison to Discuss Indian Point 2 Emergency Preparedness, Response Issues

Efforts to improve the Indian Point 2 nuclear power plant's emergency response organization and on-site emergency preparedness program will be discussed by Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff and plant officials next Wednesday.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in the Public Meeting Room at the NRC Region I office in King of Prussia, Pa. It will be open to the public for observation. NRC staff will be available afterwards to answer questions from interested audience members.

Consolidated Edison Company of New York, which operates the Buchanan, N.Y., reactor, has been undertaking the improvements since last fall. Those efforts intensified following a steam generator tube failure on February 15 that led to a shutdown of the plant. The plant has remained out of service since then. While the utility's emergency response organization took the necessary steps to protect the public health and safety during the February 15th event, there were a number of problems with the emergency plan and implementing procedures.

Issues involving state, county and local emergency plans as they relate to Indian Point 2 will not be discussed during this meeting.
