NRC CHAIRMAN RICHARD A. MESERVE TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE AT SAN ONOFRE Dr. Richard A. Meserve, Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is visiting the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station near San Clemente on Tuesday, June 6, and will be available to speak to the media at 1:15 p.m. in the plant's Learning Center. The Learning Center is located at 14300 Mesa Road in building E-50. Security personnel at the plant entrance will provide directions. In the morning the Chairman will tour the plant and meet with officials of Southern California Edison and the NRC staff. Dr. Meserve will answer questions from interested news media on topics affecting SONGS and the NRC. These may include the recent change in policy regarding the number of resident inspectors assigned to multi-unit sites such as SONGS, and the significant change in the method the NRC will use to assess plant safety performance, which was adopted for all plants this spring. Dr. Meserve was sworn in as Chairman of the NRC on October 29 last year. Prior to that he was a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Covington & Burling, having joined the firm in 1981. From 1977 to 1981, Dr. Meserve served on the White House staff as legal counsel to the President's Science and Technology Advisor. He holds a B.A. degree from Tufts University, a law degree from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University. ### |
