NRC Reschedules Meeting on Oyster Creek Radiological Review On Tuesday, February 29, Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will present the results of the agency's review of the radiological condition of land adjacent to the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant that may be sold by the facility's current owner, GPU Nuclear Corp. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the Administration Building cafeteria at the plant, which is located on Route 9 in Lacey Township, N.J. The meeting, which had previously been scheduled for January 25 but was postponed due to inclement weather, will be open to the public for observation. NRC staff members will be available afterward to answer questions. GPU Nuclear was planning to sell about 600 acres of the 755-acre site, though that transaction is currently on hold. The NRC has been evaluating the land involved to determine if there are any issues involved that could adversely affect public health and safety, impact the environment or compromise the continued safe operation of Oyster Creek. As part of that review, NRC staff conducted an on-site confirmatory survey and inspection from November 15-18 to verify and validate GPU Nuclear's assessment of the radiological condition of the land involved. # |
