NRC Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste to Meet in Irvine, California, February 23 - 25 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste (ACNW) will hold a meeting on February 23-25 in Irvine, California, to conduct a self assessment and outline priority issues in an action plan for 2000, among other things. The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in Room 2D Large Conference at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center of the National Academies, 100 Academy Drive, Irvine, California. It will begin at 8:30 each day. On Wednesday, February 23, the committee will conduct a self-assessment session, examine ways to increase operational efficiency and hear from guest lecturer, Dr. Stan Kaplan, on the use of probability. The following day's schedule features a review of the committee's goals and objectives, a look at priority issues for its Year 2000 Action Plan, as well as focusing on succession planning for members and staff over the next five years. On the final day of the meeting, the committee will discuss ACNW planning and procedures, the preparation of ACNW reports, which may include reports on the NRC's proposed high-level waste regulation, the release of slightly contaminated solid material, the defense-in-depth safety philosophy, and the Department of Energy's Yucca Mountain siting guidelines.
