NRC to Discuss Apparent Violations at Jersey City Medical Center

Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with officials of Jersey City Medical Center on Tuesday, February 15, to discuss several apparent violations of agency requirements at the Jersey City, N.J., facility. The apparent violations involve the handling of radioactive materials.

The Predecisional Enforcement Conference, which will be open to the public, is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in the Public Meeting Room of the NRC Region I office in King of Prussia, Pa. NRC staff will remain after the meeting to answer questions from interested members of the public.

Based on an inspection conducted on January 5 at the medical center, the NRC staff has identified three apparent violations that are being considered for escalated enforcement. They are: 1.) failure to follow package receipt procedures; 2.) failure to secure licensed radioactive materials from unauthorized access; and 3.) failure to provide adequate training to individuals involved in the receipt and use of licensed radioactive materials.

The decision to hold a pre-decisional enforcement conference does not mean that the NRC has determined that a violation has occurred or that enforcement action will be taken. Rather, the purpose is to discuss apparent violations, their causes and safety significance; to provide the licensee an opportunity to point out any errors that may have been made in the NRC inspection report; and to enable the licensee to outline its proposed corrective actions.

No decision on the apparent violations will be made at this conference. Those decisions will be made by senior NRC officials at a later time.
