Haddam Neck Decommissioning Work to Be Discussed on Jan. 27

Staff from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company will meet on Thursday, January 27, to discuss decommissioning work at the Haddam Neck nuclear power plant in Haddam, Conn. Connecticut Yankee, which operated the plant, announced in December 1996 that it was permanently ceasing operation of the facility.

The meeting, which will be open to the public for observation, is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Public Meeting Room at the NRC Region I office in King of Prussia, Pa. The office is located at 475 Allendale Road. NRC staff will be available after the meeting to answer questions from interested members of the public.

Specifically, there will be a discussion of the transition of decommissioning work from Connecticut Yankee to a contractor, Bechtel Power Corp. Other topics will include spent fuel storage plans, large component removal and the employee concerns program.

Connecticut Yankee is exercising the DECON option for the decommissioning of Haddam Neck, a pressurized-water reactor that began operating in 1968. DECON is the alternative under which the equipment, structures and portions of the plant and site containing radioactive contaminants are removed or decontaminated to a level that permits the property to be released for unrestricted use.
