NRC Commissioner to Visit St. Lucie Nuclear Plant on January 14

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissioner Jeffrey S. Merrifield will visit Florida Power & Light Company's St. Lucie nuclear power plant on Friday, January 14 to tour the facility and discuss its operation with FP&L officials.

Commissioner Merrifield will be available to meet with interested news media representatives at 3:15 p.m. (EST) in the auditorium of the plant visitor and training center, located adjacent to the plant on U.S. A1A on Hutchinson Island, near Ft. Pierce.

Commissioner Merrifield was sworn in as a member of the NRC on October 23, 1998. Prior to assuming that post, he served for several years as a senior counsel and legislative assistant to two United States Senators and as a Washington, D.C. attorney, specializing in environmental and regulatory issues.

A native of Antrim, N.H., he majored in political science and history at Tufts University where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree, magna cum laude, in 1985. He received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1992. He is a member of the bar of both New Hampshire and the District of Columbia.
