Research Library news: LACASIS honors Herbert Van de Sompel

The Los Angeles Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology (LACASIS) has selected Herbert Van de Sompel as the winner of this year's LACASIS Contributions to Information Science. The award is presented to individuals who are recognized by their colleagues as exceptional leaders whose dedication, commitment and vision inspire others, or whose singular contribution to the field of information science has been particularly significant. In particular Van de Sompel is honored and recognized for his groundbreaking contributions in the areas of the Open URL Framework, the Open Archives Initiative and the URI schema. Past award winners include such eminent names as: Eugene Garfield, Jose-Marie Griffiths, Carlos Cuandra and Clifford Lynch.

New resources: Nature goes back to the Sixties

Nature's online archive now goes back to the Sixties with the addition of all content published between January 1960 and December 1969. Users can search an additional 53,069 articles from 522 newly available issues.

All editorial content from the print issues is available including Articles and Letters, Review material, News and Views, News and comment, Literature and Essays, plus supplements. All images have been included when available within online copyright.

Nature articles are linked to full text through SearchPlus and are available for browsing at the Nature website.

Research Library news: ISTEC honors Rick Luce


Rick Luce, Director of the LANL Research Library, has been honored by the Board of Directors of the Ibero-America Science and Technology Education Consortium (ISTEC) for his "support for the development of digital libraries in Latin America, and for your vision that resulted in the adoption of the Brazilian Declaration on Open Access in 2004." Rick received the award in November 2005 at a ceremony at the ISTEC headquarters in Albuquerque.


ISTEC is a non-profit organization comprised of educational, research, industrial, and multilateral organizations throughout the Americas and the Iberian Peninsula. The Consortium fosters scientific, engineering, and technology education, and joint r&D efforts among its members for the application and transfer of technology. Universities from Argentina to Venezuela belong to ISTEC as well as industrial organizations such as Microsoft, Sun and HP. The ultimate goal of ISTEC is to enhance resources in Ibero-America and contribute to regional development by improving educational opportunities, disseminating technology, and opening potential avenues for business development.

Research Library news: New self-checkout machine

With the arrival of the new self-checkout machine, library users can return to checking out their own books, day or night! This new machine allows you to use your badge to check out library items. On the back of your badge, below your Z# is a small barcode. Scan this at the self-checkout machine prior to scanning the desired checkout items. You will now receive a paper receipt with the date due.
If for some reason your badge barcode is damanged, you just use the key pad to enter your Z#.
