READ ME FILE Office of Personnel Management Computation of Interest on Back Pay System ReadmeWD.txt File Downloading and Installation Instructions July 1999 REQUIREMENTS 1. The program was specifically designed to run under the Windows 95 Operating System. The program may run on some other operating systems (e.g., some testing was done on Windows NT version 4); however, we cannot guarantee compatibility. 2. Your display screen must be set to 800 x 600 pixels before you start the program. The display settings can be verified or changed by taking the following actions in Windows 95: From the Start menu, select Settings then Control Panel. Double-click on the Display icon. Click on the Settings tab. In the Desktop area box, make sure the setting is 800 x 600 pixels and change the Color palette to the highest color count. This should be at least 256 or True Color (32 bit), if available. 3. You should have at least 7 MB of space available on your hard drive to accommodate installation of the program. (The program will require 1 to 7 MB of space depending on whether certain support files are already loaded on your computer.) DOWNLOADING INSTRUCTIONS 1. Before beginning the download, you should close all running applications. 2. Click on the download link on the 'Computation of Interest Back Pay System' web page. 3. Select a folder on your hard disk to download the program file (backpay.exe). 4. Begin the download process. The length of time for downloading may depend on your system's download speed. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS 1. Go the the folder where you downloaded the program file 'backpay.exe'. 2. Double click on the 'backpay.exe' file to initiate the installation process. 3. A 'WinZip Self-Extractor' screen is displayed showing the default directory 'C:\temp'. Unless there is a valid reason for changing this, just accept the default settings. [NOTE: 'When Done Unzipping Run SETUP.EXE' should be selected to automatically start the program installation process.] Click on 'Unzip'. 4. Setup will display a window that states: "Copying initialization files... (These files will be removed if setup is cancelled)" 5. An OPM Project Setup screen is displayed that states: "Welcome to the OPM Back Pay Interest System installation program. Setup cannot install system files or update shared files if they are in use. Before proceeding, we recommend that you close any application you may be running." If you do have any applications running, exit the setup program, close the applications, and begin the setup process again (go to Step 2). If all applications are already closed, click on the 'OK' button. 6. An OPM Back Pay Interest System Setup screen is displayed showing the default directory of 'C:\Program Files\OPM Back Pay Interest System\'. Unless there is a valid reason for changing this, just accept the default directory by clicking on the large button with a picture of a computer on it. (If you choose an alternative directory, we advise that the directory be located on your computer's C: drive.) 7. After the Setup program has finished running, the following message appears: "OPM Back Pay Interest System Setup was completed successfully." Click on 'OK'. 8. From the Start menu, select Programs, then OPM Back Pay Interest System. From the Main Menu, select Help to view additional online documentation for the system. The documentation will be displayed in Microsoft Internet Explorer as a web page. You can print from there if you desire to obtain a hard copy. REINSTALLATION If it is necessary to reinstall the programs again on the same computer: NOTE: If you want to keep the entries already entered in the database, you must copy the OPM.MBD file to another directory to preserve it before completing the following steps. A. From the 'Start' menu, select 'Settings' and then 'Control Panel'. B. Double-click on the 'Add/Remove Programs' icon. C. Highlight the OPM Back Pay Interest System and click on the 'Add/Remove' button. Click on 'Yes' to the Application Removal message. D. Follow the steps above to re-install. [END]
