STATUS OF IMPROVEMENTS TO CALVERT CLIFFS RADIATION SAFETY PROGRAM

WILL BE THE SUBJECT OF NOVEMBER 13 MEETING BETWEEN NRC, BG&E

Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff and officials of the Baltimore Gas & Electric Company will meet on Thursday, November 13, to review the status of improvements to the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant's radiation safety program. BG&E owns and operates the two-reactor facility.

The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. at the plant, located at 1650 Calvert Cliffs Parkway, Lusby, Md. It will be open to the public for observation.

In August, the NRC proposed a $176,000 fine against BG&E for three violations of agency requirements stemming from inadequate control of diving activities in the Unit 2 spent fuel pool at Calvert Cliffs. In addition, the NRC cited, but did not propose a fine, for 10 other violations involving other inadequate radiological controls.

In response to the violations, BG&E committed to making improvements in the plant's radiation safety program, including tighter controls over the use of divers.
