No. 97-136 September 17, 1997
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's internet web site has been given a face lift and new features and resources have been added.
The NRC's home page is at <http://www.nrc.gov>.
The home page has a new graphical look that loads quickly and provides links to the principal interest areas on the NRC web site.
New navigational aids help users move around the web site. An Excite search engine allows searching the entire site and selected information areas. Also a listing provides site contents and a "what's new" link shows new features.
A Reference Library has been added to provide access to significant NRC documents and reference materials. The full text of NRC regulations -- Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations -- is now in this reference library. The regulations will be updated periodically as changes are made.
Other Reference Library documents for viewing on the web site or for downloading include:
** NRC Information Digest, 1997 edition, with extensive background information and data on NRC regulatory activities, nuclear power plants, use of radioactive materials, and radioactive waste storage and disposal. ** General audience brochures on radioactive waste and use of radioactive materials ** Technical NRC documents on such topics as dry cask storage of spent fuel; equipment testing at nuclear power plants; and portable gauges containing radiation sources. ** Transcripts of Commission meetings from 1991 to date.
Another addition to the web site is a School Programs page which features information of use to teachers and students. This includes availability of a new video about the NRC.
The NRC web site continues to offer current information on NRC regulatory activities in the safe use of radioactive materials, including nuclear power plants, nuclear medicine program, industrial and commercial uses, and waste disposal. These information categories, updated frequently, include:
** NRC news releases and speeches ** Nuclear power plant status, events reported by NRC licensees, and NRC daily staff reports. ** Enforcement actions ** Weekly information report from the staff to the Commission ** NRC Commission, Advisory Committee, and staff meetings open to the public ** Preliminary notifications (staff reports of item of NRC interest) ** Selected regulatory documents and reports ** Systematic Assessment of Licensee Performance reports -- issued every 18-24 months on the NRC's review of the performance of each operating nuclear power station.
The NRC staff welcomes suggestions and comments on the NRC web pages. Comments can be sent by e-mail to nrcweb@nrc.gov or opa@nrc.gov.
