I-97-114 August 29, 1997
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has made available for public comment the post-shutdown decommissioning activities report for the Haddam Neck plant in Haddam, CT, filed with NRC on August 22. Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company, which operated the plant, has selected the DECON alternative for decommissioning the site. DECON is the alternative in which the equipment, structures and portions of the facility and site containing radioactive contaminants are removed or decontaminated to a level that permits the property to be released for unrestricted use shortly after operations cease. At Haddam Neck, decontamination and removal of all structures and systems, except the spent fuel storage building, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2002. Connecticut Yankee plans to decontaminate the main coolant system early next year and to begin removing large components (principally the reactor vessel, steam generators and pressurizer) by mid-year. Soil remediation and the final site survey, excluding the spent fuel storage building, are scheduled for mid-2004. The total cost is estimated at $426,726,000. The report is available for public inspection at the local public document room in the Russell Library, 123 Broad Street, in Middletown. A copy is also available on the NRC's web site: http://www.nrc.gov/reports/cy97075.htm. Comments should be submitted in writing to Morton B. Fairtile, Mail Stop 011-B 20, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, D.C. 20555, by September 26.
