I-97-74 June 26, 1997
NOTE TO EDITORS:
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with officials of Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corporation on Tuesday, July 1, to discuss the results of the NRC's recent architect and engineering inspection at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant in Vernon, Vt.
An architect and engineering inspection focuses on reviews of the plant's original design and configuration, and conformance with the licensee's safety analysis report. The inspection team was made up of engineers from NRC and design specialists from Stone & Webster, an architect/engineering firm with which NRC has contracted. The Vermont Yankee inspection was conducted from mid-May through June 13.
These inspections are the result of recent findings that licensees at the Millstone plant in Connecticut and at other facilities routinely performed full-core offloads during refueling outages without performing the necessary safety evaluation. It also was discovered that other facilities' actual as-built configuration or operations were inconsistent with the design basis information described in their licenses.
The meeting, which begins at 1:00 p.m. and is open to the public for observation, will be held in the Governor Hunt House on Governor Hunt Road at the site.
