NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON NUCLEAR WASTE

TO MEET MAY 20-22 IN ROCKVILLE, MD

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste (ACNW) has scheduled a technical meeting May 20-22 in Rockville, Md.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 8:30 a.m. each day in Room T-2B3 in the NRC's Two White Flint North Building, 11545 Rockville Pike.

Although meetings of the ACNW are open, they are not part of the NRC's public hearing process. The ACNW was established in 1988 to advise the Commission on all aspects of nuclear waste management. While anyone may attend the meeting, the committee will consider only oral or written statements, arranged in advance and limited to specific matters set forth in a Notice of Meeting published in the May 6 edition of the Federal Register.

Among the topics to be discussed during the meeting are the use of performance assessments in decommissioning various facilities; and waste classification at Hanford, Washington, and Savannah River, South Carolina. Committee members also will prepare for their meeting with the Commission scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on May 20. In addition, they will meet with the NRC's Director of the Division of Waste Management as well as members of the Department of Energy and NRC staff for discussions on the high-level waste repository program and the NRC's defense-in-depth philosophy. The committee will also prepare for its June meeting with the Commission, and will discuss proposed reports, topics for future consideration and miscellaneous matters.

(ACNW schedules are subject to change. Anyone planning to attend should confirm the schedule the day before the meeting by calling (301) 415-5024. ACNW meting notices, meeting transcripts, and letter reports are now available on FedWorld from the "NRC MAIN MENU." Direct Dial Access number to FedWorld is (800) 303-9672, the local direct number is (703) 321-3339.
