NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS

TO MEET MAY 1-3

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) has scheduled a technical meeting May 1-3 in Rockville, Maryland.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in Conference Room 2B3 in the NRC's Two White Flint North Building at 11545 Rockville Pike.

Although meetings of the ACRS are open, they are not part of the NRC's public hearing process. The ACRS, an advisory group to the Commission, conducts independent, highly technical reviews of safety considerations related to nuclear facilities. While anyone may attend, the committee will consider only oral or written statements arranged in advance and limited to specific matters set forth in a Notice of Meeting published in the Federal Register April 18.

The meeting may include closed sessions, if required, to discuss proprietary information.

Here is the complete meeting agenda:

THURSDAY, MAY 1

8:30 to 8:45 a.m. -- Opening remarks by the ACRS chairman.

8:45 to 10:30 a.m. -- Discussion with NRC staff and industry representatives on review criteria for design basis verification.

10:45 to 11:45 a.m. -- Discussions with NRC staff on electric utility restructuring and deregulation.

1:00 to 2:00 p.m. -- Discussion with NRC staff and industry representatives of proposed final regulatory guide "Time Response Design Criteria for Safety-Related Operator Actions."

2:00 to 3:15 p.m. -- Briefing by the NRC Deputy Executive Director for Operations on regulatory effectiveness.

3:30 to 5:15 p.m. -- Preparation of ACRS reports.

5:30 to 7:00 p.m. -- Preparation for meeting with NRC Commissioners.

FRIDAY, MAY 2

9:00 to 10:30 a.m. -- Meeting with NRC Commissioners.

11:00 to 12:00 noon -- Discussion of staff requirements memo on direction setting issue 22, research.

1:00 to 2:00 p.m. -- Discussion with NRC staff on the maintenance rule and results of the pilot inspections conducted by NRC staff to monitor the effectiveness of licensees in its implementation.

2:00 to 2:30 p.m. -- Future ACRS activities.

2:30 to 2:45 p.m. -- Reconciliation of ACRS comments and recommendations.

3:00 to 7:00 p.m. -- Preparation of ACRS reports.

SATURDAY, MAY 3

8:30 to 9:00 a.m. -- Report of the planning and procedures subcommittee on matters related to the conduct of ACRS business and other activities.

9:00 to 12:00 noon -- Preparation of ACRS reports.

12:00 to 1:00 p.m. -- Strategic planning and discussion of rebaselining of ACRS activities for FY 1997.

1:00 to 1:30 p.m. -- Discussion of miscellaneous matters.
