No: II-97-61 August 28, 1997
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has issued an Order to a former employee at Duke Power Company's McGuire nuclear power plant which prohibits involvement in NRC-licensed activities for a one-year period and requires notification to the NRC of the person's first involvement in NRC-licensed activities for an additional year after the prohibition expires.
NRC officials sent notification to Robert J. Nelson on August 18, informing him of the action. The agency issued the order because Nelson deliberately falsified a document describing the replacement of a valve gasket at the McGuire plant. An NRC investigation found that on January 3, 1996, Nelson decided to reuse an old gasket, intentionally signed the procedure step claiming he had replaced the gasket and later was not forthright in providing information about the incident to investigators.
Nelson was terminated by Duke Power Company in January 1996.
