U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Public Document Room

Originator: U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Office of the Chief Information Officer, Information Management Division

Abstract: Reflecting the Commission's openness policy, the NRC staff has released over two million documents to the Headquarters Public Document Room (PDR) in Rockville, MD, since the agency's founding in 1975. This comprehensive collection relates to NRC licensing proceedings, rulemaking activities, and the setting of policy for nuclear regulation in the United States. Documents concerning the regulatory activities of the former Atomic Energy Commission are also in the collection. Persons interested in detailed, technical information about nuclear facilities and licensees find this specialized research center to be a major resource. With some exceptions, documents from the collection can be reproduced in paper, microfiche, or in some cases, diskette and videotape for a nominal fee. The PDR also offers a Standing Order Subscription Service for automatic receipt of selected serially published documents and reports. Certain items of immediate interest, such as Press Releases and Meeting Notices, are posted in the Reading Room of the facility. The PDR does not contain books, journals, trade publications, or documentation of industry standards. The PDR manages the computerized, online Bibliographic Retrieval System (BRS) as well as Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) for public access to the PDR collection. PDR Reference Librarians are on duty to assist on-site users and those who call or write with information requests. The librarians will also perform ADAMS and BRS searches, as well as other reference services related to NRC information for the public. Use of ADAMS, BRS, and the PDR reference services are without charge, except that the user is responsible for fees for his or her telecommunications and for ordering documents. The public is invited to visit the PDR, located at 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852, Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. EST, except on Federal holidays. To obtain service by phone, including ADAMS and BRS access or additional information, call 1-800-397-4209, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. EST. Send a facsimile to 301-415-3548; transmit to Internet address pdr@nrc.gov; or write to U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Public Document Room, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, MD 20852. Additional information about the PDR may be found in the Public Document Room User's Guide (NUREG/BR-0004) and related fact sheets.
