Adherence to a prescribed treatment regimen, whether medication, diet, or lifestyle, can often be a matter of life and death in the chronic diseases under the NIDDK mission. When these seemingly rigid requirements are ignored by the adolescent going through the sometimes difficult transition to adulthood, the results can be tragic. The purpose of this workshop is to explore the risk factors for nonadherence in adolescent patients with kidney disease, diabetes, or gastrointestinal disease and then determine ways to promote better adherence. The anticipated end product of the meeting is the identification of potential areas for future clinical research.
