The science capabilities of the Western Ecological Research Center revolve around a three-dimensional approach to addressing ecological information needs. The first is our specialized expertise in various taxonomic or ecological disciplines. Throughout the center are scientists who have developed extensive expertise in such fields as herpetology, conservation biology, wetlands ecology, or ecological restoration. The second approach, responding to a growing interest in a biogeographical orientation to management, is based on bioregions. Center scientists have extensive experience with a variety of ecological issues, often in more than one bioregion. The third approach of the Center involves specialized abilities and experience in methodologies. Various WERC scientists have established expertise in methods such as geographic information systems (GIS), radio and satellite telemetry, amphibian monitoring, and so forth. Center field stations also have a collective capability not confined to the bioregions, but rather, focused on cross-regional issues. This capability is neither geographically nor client-restricted, and uses broad syntheses, systems analysis, and applications of non-traditional approaches to serve client needs.

All research projects at WERC are categorized by the primary "Program Element", that defines the areas of science within the Biological Resources Division upon which the research focuses. A Program Element consists of a group of projects addressing similar, broad areas of science. There are nine Program Elements within the Biological Resources Division that are used for all purposes of scientific planning, evaluation, and budget development.
