Ocean Drilling Data

NGDC operates a parallel archive for data from the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) and Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) through an agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF).

All DSDP core data, all historic (pre-JANUS) core data from Legs 101-129 of the ODP, and all ODP prime core data in tab-delimited form, are available for free on-line download from NGDC.

The prime ODP data files are ASCII selections from the ODP JANUS database, provided to NGDC by IODP staff along with full documentation. See links at lower left to the ODP legacy web site, which offers online access to these same data and to ODP and DSDP publications.

Two composite DSDP data reports published by NGDC as part of the World Data Center Report series are also available (see links at left).

NGDC also archives high-resolution TIFF images of both DSDP and ODP core photographs, including close-up core photographs. Due to their large volume, and their availability in PDF form on the IODP web site, these images are only available offline from NGDC, by request.

CD-ROM versions of the DSDP core data for Legs 1-96 and the ODP core data for Legs 101-129 are available via the online store. The data on these CD-ROMs may be downloaded for free using the links at left.

The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) was an international program to explore the ocean basins funded by the Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling (JOIDES), a consortium of several foreign countries and the US National Science Foundation. ODP is managed by the Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI).

The Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), the predecessor of the ODP, operated from 1967 through 1983.

Beginning in 2003, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) replaced the ODP. For complete information on the DSDP, ODP, and IODP programs, see the external link to the IODP at left.
