Marine Geoscience Data System

The Marine Geoscience Data System (MGDS) provides access to data portals for the NSF-supported Ridge 2000 and MARGINS programs, the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Data Synthesis, the Global Multi-Resolution Topography Synthesis, and Seismic Reflection Field Data Portal. These portals were developed and are maintained as a single integrated system, providing free public access to a wide variety of primarily marine geoscience data collected during expeditions throughout the global oceans. In addition to these Data Portals, MGDS also is host to the US Antarctic Program Data Coordination Center (USAP-DCC) which provides tools to help scientists find Antarctic data of interest and satisfy their obligations for data sharing under the NSF Office of Polar Programs (OPP) data policy.

The MGDS expedition catalog and data repository is powered by a relational database, which can be queried through web-based keyword and map searches, and is accessible through web services that follow the specifications of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC).

GeoMapApp, a standalone data visualization and analysis tool developed by the MGDS, permits dynamic data exploration from a map interface and the capability to generate and download custom grids and maps and other data. Through GeoMapApp, users can access data hosted at the MGDS, at other data repositories, and import their own data sets.

Our Global Multi-Resolution Topography (GMRT) is a continuously-updated compilation of seafloor bathymetry intregated with integrated with global land topography. It can be used to create maps and grids and it can be accessed through several standard programmatic interfaces incuding GeoMapApp and Google Earth. The GMRT compilation can also be explored in 3D using Virtual Ocean.

The MGDS MediaBank contains high quality images, illustrations, animations and video clips that are organized into galleries. Media can be sorted by category, and keyword and map-based search options are provided. Each item in the MediaBank is accompanied by metadata that provides access into our cruise catalog and data repository.
